[1] For example, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689–1762, an English aristocrat and writer) was instrumental in the writing of many works of John Gay (1688-1732, an English poet) and Alexander Pope (1688–1744, considered the greatest English poet of his time.)

Lady Mary was never mentioned in any of their publications.

Likewise, Richard Sympson, Lemuel Gulliver’s cousin and publisher, neglected to mention Mary Burton-Gulliver’s contribution to the editing of her husbands’ memoirs, in his “The Publisher to the Reader” introduction to ‘Gulliver’s Travels’(1727).

Another example: as of 1859, Mary Anne Evans published her books using the pen name of George Eliot. Charlotte Bronte used the name of Currer Bell; Julia Bécour used the name of Paul Grendel, etc. etc.

All names long forgotten and their books no longer read. But nobody reads books today, anyway. Except for the Harry Potter series, of course, written by J.K. Rowling.

Know more examples?

Jonathan Richardson
Alexandre Louis François d'Albert Durade

What readers say?

Xaviera Hollander

("The Happy Hooker" and dozen more books):

We've been friends  for almost half a century and enjoyed several of each others' theatrical productions, so reading your memoir of Mrs. Gulliver is a wonderful surprise: so witty, subversive, and yet, arousing... it tickled my mind as well as inspired my G-spot. Highly recommended!
