[55]  ‘Yard’ was the word used for ‘Penis’ as of 1379, and Steven Blankaart’s definition of ‘Penis’ in his “Physical Dictionary of 1684” is: "the Yard, made up of two nervous Bodies, the Channel, Nut, Skin, and Fore-skin, etc."

 

      I decided to keep the various terms Mary used for the various private parts in her memoir, because otherwise this publication might seem too vulgar for the modern, educated and self-respecting reader.
