[120] Swaddle is a form of full-body diapers that was practiced throughout history, all over the world, till the 17th Century.

The theory was that, besides the benefit of easy transportation of the infant, keeping the immediate surrounding free of the baby's bodily rejects, restraining his free movement so he wouldn’t wiggle away, the young creature would also learn at an early age that stronger powers than his or her own are controlling him or her, at all times.

When the medical theory in favour of swaddles was disproved, it went out of fashion. Church attendance fell sharply and the rest is history.

Some babies turn out as rebels, having been strapped in a swaddle.
Artist: Georges de La Tour (1593–1652)

So what would you suggest as an alternative way of showing people their proper place?

What readers say?

Xaviera Hollander

("The Happy Hooker" and dozen more books):

We've been friends  for almost half a century and enjoyed several of each others' theatrical productions, so reading your memoir of Mrs. Gulliver is a wonderful surprise: so witty, subversive, and yet, arousing... it tickled my mind as well as inspired my G-spot. Highly recommended!
