[134]           'The London Gazette' started as 'The Oxford Gazette' on 7 November 1665.

 

    When the Royal House tried to escape the Plague by moving to Oxford, and anything 'London' was deemed contagious, Henry Muddiman (1629- 1692,) a well-connected journalist, continued the publication of his Newsbooks under the healthier name 'The Oxford Gazette'.

 

    These publications were not sold to the wide public but were sent to subscribers, nobility and merchants.
